Artist Stephen Boren

Stephen Boren is a watercolor artist celebrated for his evocative ski and western artwork, capturing both the exhilaration of mountain life and the deeper stories woven into the American West. His ski paintings are especially known for their iconic “powder pieces,” which convey the sensation of floating through fresh snow—moments of weightlessness, freedom, and connection that resonate with anyone who has experienced a perfect day in the mountains. These works go beyond action, reflecting life, relationships, and shared experiences shaped by mountain culture.

Stephen’s western art takes a gestalt approach, where each piece is greater than the sum of its parts. Raised in Sandpoint, Idaho—a place defined by outdoor adventure and farm life—Stephen’s artistic foundation was shaped early. He grew up in the studio of his father, renowned artist Nelson Boren, learning by observation, experimentation, and countless hours spent creating and exploring the outdoors together. This upbringing instilled both technical skill and a deep respect for storytelling through art.

Stephen now lives in Liberty, Utah, where he paints from a loft in his barn, surrounded by the landscapes that continue to inspire his work. He is married to Rosie Boren and is the father of four children, with whom he spends as much time as possible outside—snowboarding, biking, exploring, and living the mountain life that so often finds its way onto his paper.
